Pictured above is ‘Reflection’, 20″ x 40″, by Janet Read, oil and cold wax on canvas.
Janet Read’s work has been described as ‘Atmospheric abstraction inspired by cloud and radiant light’, and the work of Rebecca Last as’ Visceral images depicting raw and unpredictable moments of environmental beauty.’
During the month of October 2017, the work of these two painters will be on display in the gallery.
Studies in light and energy no. 128, diptych, 12″x24″, by Rebecca Last, acrylic on canvas.
Both Janet Read and Rebecca Last are inspired by ever-shifting aspects of nature. Observing the sky, water and light over the landscape, they create representations of experience. Both Last and Read present the viewer with abstracted paintings that reflect memories of places and observations of the environment.
Janet Read cites Lake Ontario, Lake Superior and the Bruce Peninsula area as her sources of inspiration, having grown up in and traveled the area over a period of twenty years. Rebecca Last has lived on and observed the shores of Rice Lake for over a decade, and draws her inspiration from this body of water.
‘Dawn Rise’ by Janet Read, 40″x40″, oil and cold wax on panel.
Together, the works of Rebecca Last and Janet Read are visual representations of places over time, layered and abstracted. There are points of connection in the work, however the respective styles of each are unmistakable. The smooth surfaces of Read’s work reflect and emanate light, incorporating bright splashes of colour. These works, often calming and somehow meditative are intuitive representations of remembered landscapes.
Last’s often dark and heavily worked surfaces offer us a different perspective. These textured pieces seem to reflect more of the potential ferocity of the sky and water, playing on the awe inspiring power of a gathering storm under a setting sun or waves crashing upon the shore.
